ELECTROVILLE
The featherlight Morgan shone as trouble free “winner” of the British Electric Foundation Reliability Trials. The gathering was casual and collegial. Builders and guests had an opportunity to try a wide variety of cars.
In addition to the organizing hosts: Bentley, Austin and Morgan; the Chrysler, Frazer Nash, Peugeot, Auto Union, Panhard and brand new Delage joined in.
A great deal was learned about the electric technical packages from extended head to head running. We certainly learned how superficial our knowledge still is! We will figure it all out in due course but gaps in our understanding became very apparent.
We weighed the cars in attendance (the ones with mostly complete bodywork):
Morgan (electric) - 178 lbs
Peugeot (gas) - 237 lbs
Panhard (gas) - 268 lbs
Chrysler (gas) - 270 lbs
Frazer Nash (gas) - 270 lbs
Austin (electric) - 275 lbs
Auto Union (gas) - 305 lbs
Bentley (electric) - 321 lbs
For some time we have questioned whether the 5KW motor we selected might not be excessive relative to the capacity and discharge rate of the battery packs we are using. We had some cut-out issues on the Austin and Bentley. More so on the heavier Bentley. The little Morgan with its 1.5KW motor had no issues.
